About this course
Several follow-up studies today demonstrate an excellent outcome of primary endodontic treatment in over 90% of cases with or without periapical lesions. However, these outcome results are demonstrated to be smaller when cross-sectional studies are taken into consideration, suggesting that a greater number of endodontic treated teeth in the general population are associated with disease (Post-Treatment endodontic disease – PTED). PTED will be predictably controlled leading to periapical healing only if the etiological factors (intra and/or extra-radicular infection) are eliminated or substantially reduced. To achieve this goal without extracting the tooth, two major therapies are considered: non-surgical retreatment and/or endodontic periapical microsurgery.
Generally PTED cases counts to at least 50% -90% of all cases referred to a practice limited to endodontics. Endodontists will face these cases daily in their practices and the clinical decision making of choosing one or another form of treatment will be depending on several biological and clinical factors that involve the patient’s decision and expectations, the tooth involved (e.g. obstacles, posts, broken files, coronal leakages, non-restorable teeth, intra/extra radicular infection etc…) and the operator’s clinical skills.
The purpose of this online course is to give an overview of the biological and clinical/technical factors associated with teeth with PTED and how to solve the clinical challenges during endodontic non-surgical retreatment to achieve a successful outcome.
Course Contents:
Clinical decision making: Endodontic microsurgery, Retreatment or Extraction
Retreatment procedures: Presentation of a new and predictable retreatment protocol including a new 3D NiTi technology.
Cleaning/irrigation: A comprehensive and evidence-based irrigation protocol will be discussed

Curriculum Vitae - Dr Gilberto Debelian
Dr. Debelian has completed his specialization in Endodontics from the University of Pennsylvania, USA in 1991 and received the Louis I. Grossman student award in Endodontics.
He has taught as a clinical instructor and associate professor at the post-doctoral endodontic program at the Department of Endodontics, University of Oslo, Norway from 1991 to 2001, and from 2006 to 2010. He has concluded his PhD studies at the University of Oslo, Norway in 1997 on endodontic microbiology, which gave him two scientific awards from the European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and from the Norwegian Dental Association both in 1997.
He is an adjunct visiting professor at the post-graduate program in endodontics, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. Dr. Debelian maintains a private practice limited to Endodontics and is responsible for the endodontic microscopy center – EndoInn.
Dr. Debelian has authored 5 chapter books in Endodontics, one book in Endodontics and written more than 60 scientific and clinical papers. He is currently member of the scientific advisory panel for the Journal of Endodontics, International Endodontic Journal and director of the Oslo Endodontic Study Club as well as the past vice-president of the Norwegian Endodontic Society.
Dr. Debelian lectures nationally and internationally on different biological and clinical topics in endodontics. Dr. Debelian is also involved on hands-on courses on different topics including on NiTi instrument technologies and operative dental microscopy both on conventional, retreatment and surgical endodontics.
